So, now that I have no existing coats of arms for the Virgil/Virgin family surname and still want one, I can create my own. Note that I have many different surnames in my family tree and am looking for an existing one in as I continue my genealogical research.
I searched the United Kingdom’s College of Arms (URL: https://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk), and after seeing the process and cost, I decided I needed to look elsewhere. That is when I found the American College of Heraldry (URL: https://americancollegeofheraldry.org). I reached out to them and Mr. David Wooten, the Executive Director.
Mr. Wooten was a tremendous help in guiding me through the process and explaining the ins and outs of an achievement. Mr. Wooten is the editor of the book The Heraldic Register of America: Golden Anniversary Edition, Series II – Volume 1. It is a good read and has a lot of examples for you to look at as you design your own. It is for sale on Amazon.
During our discussions, I realized that if I designed an achievement for myself, I would leave out my brother and his family. Mr. Wooten explained that I could create one for my father, and that would include my brother. So, I researched my dad, my brother, and myself to create my father’s family achievement.
The following blog posts will discuss the Achievement I designed in detail.
